About the Artist:

Germaine Arnaktauyok is an Inuit artist and illustrator best known for her prints and etchings depicting Inuit myths and traditional ways of life. In 1999, she designed the special edition two-dollar coin commemorating the founding of the territory of Nunavut. She lives in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

About the Art:

“For my design I looked at Inuit Kamiks with furs and leather from the 1940’s. Back then, they used to make Kamiks on bleached and black seal skin. To turn seal skin white, you remove the fur then hang it outside in the wintertime and it gets bleached. Then they would sew black sealskin appliques over top. They were almost in the shape of a stylized flower. It’s a very stark design. There’s so much white that I wanted to modify it and break it up with bold black lines. I wanted to stay close to Inuit design. I tried to go back and keep it traditional as much as I could.” - Germaine Arnaktauyok
